drink or die

Summary: In the article “Alcoholic-Beverage Industry Needs Young Drinkers”, the author states her opinion on a very serious issue: alcohol-beverage producers are targeting young people, including underage persons with their advertising. The author begins by stating, “it is proven that a younger person that consumes alcohol is more likely to become dependent upon the poisonous drink and will therefore, buy more alcohol.” The writer is obviously against alcohol producers targeting younger persons in order to sell more of their product.

Commentary: I believe that advertising aimed towards the younger generations is wrong. Underage drinking is illegal and early drinkers are four times more likely to become dependent upon alcohol than that of a twenty-one year old. Early drinking is associated with more disciplinary and academic problems in high school, trouble with employment, and behavior problems in young adulthood compared to nondrinkers. Alcohol is a factor in the four leading causes of death among persons ages ten to twenty-four! 1) motor-vehicle crashes 2) unintentional injury 3) homicide 4) suicide.

Analysis: The author used several different credible references for the many facts she provided. Some of which were from surveys taken by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, the National Longitudal Alcohol Epidemiologic Survey, and many others. He appeals to logos, by providing many facts and statistics.

you only think you’re an adult

The author of “Underage Drinking Responsibilities Underestimated” states her opinion on a serious issue: should the legal drinking age be eighteen years of age? She starts by showing how one college, Western Illinois University, tends to have issues with underage drinking but the students do so responsibly. Most of the students who have been drinking arrange for rides home. She also states how vandalism, fighting, and noise that occur on campus were proven to be caused more by gangs and drugs than alcohol.
I would have to agree with the author who is trying to prove that kids that drink at the age of eighteen can do so responsibly. I feel like if a person is allowed rights such as voting, buying cigarettes, joining the army, etc. they should be responsible enough to purchase and consume alcoholic beverages. Although I do feel like if the person is under eighteen, they are not yet legally an adult and therefore should not be drinking. Though I clearly favor a reversal in the legal drinking age it is unlikely to happen any time soon so there shouldn’t be any controversy over the subject.
The author seems credible to me because she is currently a student at Western Illinois University and she has seen the things that occur there with alcohol. The author is using pathos because she was trying to persuade emotion.

I Am A Spartan

I am a Spartan

Fierce, deadly and feared by all.

Intellectual and strategic,

I plan out my ways to enrapture success.

A mannerly soul.

Kind to maost, unless i am unkinded.

Misunderstood,

A lover of war, yet a lover of peace

A family man

Hard working at day, caring husband at night.

A pusher of self

Willing to die, but strong enough to live.
